About the Course

The power industry is complex, and many energy professionals understand their piece of it without seeing how all the pieces fit together. Intro to Power Markets provides a practical foundation for understanding how the power system and wholesale markets work—and how generation, transmission, utilities, customers, and markets connect. The goal is to turn siloed knowledge into a shared understanding of the bigger picture.

Meet Your Instructor: Drake Herrman

Drake Herrman created the Power Market Framework after years of watching talented people struggle to gain real traction in their markets. I noticed a pattern: the most successful professionals weren't necessarily familiar with ISO and RTO energy terminology. Drake is an energy professional with more than 7 years of experience working at the intersection of distributed energy resources, technology, utilities, and wholesale power markets. Throughout his career, he's researched clean energy policy and technology integration across all seven U.S. wholesale power markets and gained hands-on experience navigating the regulatory, technical, and market structures that connect energy resources to the grid. He's also worked directly with Market Participant registration, DER integration, and the evolving rules that shape how resources participate in wholesale markets. He learned that the power industry can be difficult to understand from the outside. There are a lot of acronyms, market rules, and moving pieces—and it can take years to develop an understanding of how they all fit together. He created this course to help shorten that learning curve. The goal is to give you a practical foundation for understanding how the power system and wholesale markets actually work, so you can speak the language, understand how the pieces connect, and build on that knowledge as you advance in the energy industry.
